About the Institution :

Tarakeswar Degree College is a relatively new college as compared to other colleges in the neighbourhood. It was established in 1986 on 5th September- a day celebrated as the Teachers’ Day in memory of renowned Indian philosopher and educationist Dr. Sarvapally Radhakrishnan. Tarakeswar is situated in the rural hinterland of Hooghly district under Tarakeswar Block in West Bengal. It is a well known place of pilgrimage for the devotees of Lord Shiva. It is about 60 kms away from the city of Kolkata, well-connected by both bus and train. The Hooghly district predominantly has an agro based economy. The students coming to the college are from families with agricultural background. There are even first generation learners and it is a challenge to impart knowledge to them. However, the apparent drawbacks did not deter the visionary forefathers of this Institution from laying its foundation. His Holiness Sri Srimat Dandiswami Hrishikesh Ashram Mahanta Maharaj of Tarakeswar Math with his kindness and generosity donated 3.5 acres of prime land for the purpose of establishing the college campus. Later Local Area Development fund from the MLA & MPs became instrumental in shaping the college. The spontaneous help of local people of Tarakeswar & the surrounding villages and the active co-operation of Tarakeswar Municipality helped to bring this center of learning into existence. The college got recognition under Section 2F & 12B of the UGC on Jan 24, 1991 The institute was accredited by NAAC in first cycle in 2007. Second cycle accreditation was done in 2015. RUSA authority has provided Infrastructure & Development grant to the College after second cycle NAAC accreditation. College offers UG courses in Arts, Science, Commerce & also self-financing UG course in Management. As the college was established in a semi urban agriculture based locality the main objective of the college was to enlighten and ignite the minds of a large section of first generation learners of peasant families. Keeping this in mind college has overcome the odds and has made significant progress in terms of physical expansion, diversification of the subject combinations and number of students getting enrolled. Now the college has expanded to 3.94 acres of land . Number of students has increased to more than 4000. The Institute has facilities of play ground, gymnasium, Seminar Hall, rooms with LCD Projector, State of the art laboratories, rain water harvesting system, solar panel, canteen, common room, cycle shed, CCTV for security. The library facilities has also been noticeably improved with the addition of new books and also a well furnished language laboratory was established. NCC cadets are pride of our college. Three NSS units are engaged in extension work in the local area. College maintains value practices like prohibition of ragging in the campus, tobacco free campus, plastic free campus, gender equity, Divyangan friendliness and promotes harmony among all castes, religions and cultures.
