Department of English:

The Department of English started its journey in the year 1986 as a pass subject only. Honours course was introduced in 2003 with 30 students. Within a few years the department became a premier centre for undergraduate education in English under the University of Burdwan. There was only one full time teacher ,Dr.Tapan Kumar Ghosh, in the department till 2008. The second post was sanctioned in that year and Dr.SutanukaGhosh Roy joined the department in 2008. At present there are three full time teachers and five State Aided College Teachers (SACT) in the department. Classes in our department are held regularly. And the relationship between the students and the teachers is cordial. The teachers are responsive to the needs of the students, meet thyem outside the classrooms and provide them academic and personal counselling. The overall results of the students in the University examinations have been satisfactory. Two Honours students, RakeshSarkar and MoumiBera, secured ranks among the toppers in the final examinations of the University in 2008 and 2012 respectively. The department has no non teaching employee at present. But we receive all sorts of administrative and technical support from the college office. The Department also runs a small library and Language Lab and conducts a certificate course in functional/ Communicative English. The Department is committed to provide an educationalenvironment that allows the students to acquire essential knowledge and skills for future career in research and in other significant spheres.
